Hi,
Windows Easy Transfer does not migrate installed applications.
When the transfer is complete your new computer will have the same personality and functionality as your old PC, plus there is no need to reinstall your programs because PCmover does it for you.

They are two different Programs to move everything to a new PC.
One, PCMover Express moves you files, settings, etc. and is free.
"To help customers on Windows XP prepare to move to a new PC, we are announcing a free transfer tool that will be available beginning this month. We have partnered with Laplink to provide Windows XP users with a free data migration tool called PCmover Express for Windows XP which copies your files and settings from your Windows XP PC to a new device running Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. This tool will copy your files, music, videos, email and user profiles and settings from your old PC to your new device, transferring across your home or work network, and even enables Windows XP users to customize exactly what they want to bring over to their new device. "

To move Applications you need PCMover Professional, which is not free.
"For Windows XP users wanting to transfer applications from their old computer, Laplink is also making available its software that migrates apps called PCmover Professional at a special price - see here for details."
Regards.

Windows Easy Transfer does not migrate installed applications.
Neither does the free version of Laplink's software, i.e., PCMover Express. If you want something that moves applications -- or at least claims to do so -- you need to BUY PCMover Professional. See comment from Bill Smithers as well as the parenthetical comment in my original post.
So I ask again, what is the difference between Windows Easy Transfer and PCMover Express? If they are the same -- as they appear to be -- why is Microsoft now pushing PCMover Express instead of its own software? Is there some failing in WET that potential users ought to know about?

So the answer is ... only Microsoft knows the difference between PCMover Express and WET -- and it isn't telling.
P.S., WET -- just like PCMover Express -- can transfer data across a network as well as by using a USB cable or external storage media. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/transferring-files-settings-faq#1TC=windows-7:

Which transfer method should I use?
Network
What you'll need: A network with both computers connected to it and the ability to access the same network folders or locations.
Make sure that both computers are connected to the same network. Start Windows Easy Transfer on your new computer (the computer that you want to transfer your files and settings to), and then follow the instructions. The Windows Easy Transfer key acts like a password to help protect files and settings when you transfer them over the network.

PC Mover Express
You can even use a network connection between computers to do the transfer without any need for cables; your content can be migrated even if your old PC is dead.

So PC Mover Express provides with a wireless connection to do the transfer so it can be done without any need for cables? AND it works if my pc is dead?! Please explain.

You can always reach an expert by phone at 1-877-696-7786.
It's their software and I'm sure they'll have an explanation as to why the discrepancies -

However, in the PCMover Express FAQ it says if the computer won't turn on, you cannot use the software. You can use PC Move Image and Drive Assistant

Or like in the old days, remove the harddrive, have a functioning computer with USB port and universal harddrive adapter. You then copy files from the old to the new.

That's just poor copy editing. And it's in a FAQ that's not specifically about PCMover Express but rather to questions relating to the end of support for XP.
"We know how important it is have all your files and photos and music and everything. Tools like Laplink are available to help you easily move all your stuff to your new PC. You can even use a network connection between computers to do the transfer without any need for cables;"
^
should be a period not a semicolon
Both PCMover Express and WET permit transfer of data over a network. You have to provide the network. If you have lots of time and don't care about potential data loss or corruption, you can use a wireless network (which is specifically supported in the Laplink PCMover documentation). Otherwise, you'll probably want to use a Gigabit LAN with a reasonably short cat 6 cable. I suspect, however, that the author of this sentence may have had in mind the special USB cables required by both WET and PCMover Express.
"your content can be migrated even if your old PC is dead."
This is a new thought and should be a separate sentence rather than a clause separated by a semicolon. Your content CAN be migrated even if your old PC is dead -- just not with PCMover Express or WET.

I called the Laplink support line to find out how to use PCMover Express to do an upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 on the same computer. They said PCMover Express requires 2 computers and that I would have to buy PCMover Professional to do a same computer upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 or 8. I have a computer with 2 drives and was going to upgrade one of the drives to Windows 7 so I could boot back to Windows XP for a while - in case I missed something during the upgrade.
So, it's back to Windows Easy Transfer for me because it supports USB disk data transfer.

I am trying to figure out how to transfer my files from Windows XP to Windows 7 on the same computer also. I have a "mass storage device" on my computer (internal). I am not very computer savvy. My question is can I transfer my files with a disc (in the second drive) or do I need to buy something to do this with? I intend to purchase Windows 7, 32-bit program for my computer.
